Mike Hogan
Hall of Fame
Inducted January 22, 2011

Not many of us can be said to participate in, and positively contribute to, soccer as has Michael “Mike” Hogan over the course of 43 years. His participation and contribution have truly constituted a “Life in Soccer”.

We trace Mike’s career back to his playing days as goalkeeper at Briarcliff High School. Mike was elected Team Captain in two of those years, and his team was State Champion in 1968. After high school, he went on to play as goalkeeper at Georgia State University, served as Team Captain in 1973, and was voted MVP in 1973. After college, Mike went on to play over the years with at least four adult amateur soccer clubs in Georgia. In all, Mike enjoyed 34 years as an active player.

A significant part of Mike’s contributions to soccer is in the field of Coaching, including youth, adult amateur, and college. His 17 years of youth soccer coaching and player development include U-19 boys, several classic teams and player development programs, and stints as Director of Coaching.

Mike’s 13 years of adult amateur coaching include additional service as Team Manager and a 5-year stint as Men’s State Select Coach.  Over four years, he served as Head Coach of Oglethorpe University, and Assistant Coach at Georgia State University. Mike’s service as Assistant Director of Coaching for Georgia Soccer included five years as coach, instructor and administrator for the State program. During that time, he co-authored the “F” Coaching Course Manual and taught many different level courses.

An achievement while on the Georgia Soccer Coaching Staff was his development and administration of one of the first youth player development programs sponsored by the Georgia Soccer in a cooperative effort with the MacDonald Corporation. Many youth players were motivated to enjoy basic skills development and went on to further enjoy long participation in Georgia Soccer.

Mike’s credentials as a certified coach include a USSF “C” License (1979), a USSF “B” License (1979), a USSF “A” License(1980), and a USSF “Y” License (2007).

The equivalent of 52 years was devoted to various positions significantly contributing to Georgia Soccer Administration and Program Development.  Mike served 1-year terms as Finance Officer, Vice President, and President of the Georgia Soccer Support Division; 33 years in the Atlanta District Amateur Soccer League as Administrator, Registrar, Discipline and Protest Committee, Treasurer, or Commissioner. At the Georgia Amateur SA his 5 years included 3 as Vice President, and 2 as GSSA Referee Committee Representative. His 5 years with the American SA included 3 years on their Board of Directors, and 2 years as Director of Coaching. Mike also devoted 2 years as Adult Amateur Administrator for Georgia Soccer.

Rounding out his soccer resume, Mike certified and remained active as both a High School Referee for 22 years and a College Referee for 19 years.

As the years of service mount up, so does the impact of one’s efforts become more apparent. Mike has positively influenced the development of players, teams, organizations, administrations, and almost every major program we provide. Much to his credit, and to soccer’s benefit, Mike filled all of these positions over the years while working in several different parallel capacities at the same time, somehow dividing his time, efforts, and abilities to see that each was successful. In all these challenging endeavors it is agreed by his grateful colleagues that each was completed with the highest degree of enthusiasm, skill, integrity, and energy.

It is with the greatest of pleasure and gratitude that Georgia Soccer recognizes as a member of the Georgia Soccer Hall of Fame, Michael “Mike” Hogan.
